Step 1: Define your niche

What exactly comes to mind when I say fashion? Clothes? Accessory? Footwear? Women? Men? Kids? The point I am trying to make is that it is a vast term, and you need to narrow it down. Before you start, choose your area of expertise. The narrower your niche, the more likely you are to get quality traffic. Make sure the topic you choose is as specific as it can get and you are passionate about it. You will use the niche you select to create your website URL, website design, and marketing strategy. Following are some examples you can use to narrow down your niche:

  • Budget-friendly shopping tips
  • DIY fashion
  • Modern-retro fashion mashup
  • What’s new in Paris Fashion week
  • Latest fashion trends for women over 40
  • Latest fashion trends for office Chics
  • Stylish and comfortable fashion for moms
  • Accessorize yourself
  • Professional men going for a meeting
  • Party boys- fashion for teenager boys

Here are a few ideas to help you choose a niche. Go through the list and choose whichever theme makes you excited. Have fun blogging!

Step 2: Installing WordPress

A variety of blogging platforms are available, including Wix, Weebly, Squarespace, and WordPress.org. There are platforms like Wix or Squarespace that offer a free version and an easy drag-and-drop editor. However, I recommend WordPress.org. It is a classic CMS that supports blogging unlike anything else. The platform offers the most advanced and flexible features for building and running a professional-looking blog. Here are some of the main reasons to use WordPress.org:

  • It is a self-hosted platform that gives you complete control over your fashion blog.
  • Open source means unlimited free and paid themes, templates, and plugins.
  • Highly intuitive and user-friendly, it is also the best option for beginners.
  • The platform is continuously improved by releasing free or paid themes, templates, and plugins, frequently. Through an online discussion forum, they will also assist you with WordPress-related problems.
  • You would have to pay only for web hosting and domain registration.

We will use WordPress as our example for the rest of the blog because it is the best available CMS option.

#Step 3: Suitable web hosting provider

The next step is to find a suitable web hosting provider. Web hosting companies basically provide a space or server where you can store your website files such as HTML, CSS, PHP, Scripts, and media files, and allow your visitors to access them whenever they want. Hosting is not limited to just servers, think of it as a rental. You won’t have to worry about things like slow websites or software updates. Choosing the right web host is therefore crucial. Here are some things to consider:

  • Uptime
  • Affordable plans
  • Optimized performance
  • Customer support
  • Server locations
  • Security
  • Under-the-hood features
  • Bandwidth and storage limit

My personal web hosting provider is Bluehost. With a great track record of uptime, it’s a reputable company. Additionally, it is the most popular web hosting provider, officially endorsed by WordPress.org. It is budget-friendly and offers relatively satisfactory customer services. Furthermore, it also offers a free trial version, which you can test out without even spending a penny. Overall, it’s a really good choice.

Steps to install WordPress on Bluehost-

  1. Login to your Bluehost cPanel
  2. Navigate to the website section and click the Install WordPress option
  3. Click the Install button
  4. Enter the domain name to install it. There is an optional box to select your subfolder you can also leave it blank if you don’t have any at the moment
  5. Click the Install Now Button to Setup WordPress
  6. Next, you can edit your email address, username, or password for the new WordPress installation
  7. After reading the license and service agreement, check the boxes
  8. Click Install Now button.

Step 4: Creative Domain name

Your domain name is the address to your blog site, which will redirect visitors to your website. You want it to be unique and glamorous so that visitors are immediately drawn to it. The domain name is probably the first thing your visitors notice. You should therefore be careful. Here are some tips for choosing a domain name:

  • Don’t use long domain names, keep them to 3 words.
  • Pick a domain name that reflects the type of content your visitors will find on your blog. Consider an evergreen, which is still relevant even if it’s outdated. If you’re 22, naming your blog ’21 years old fashionista’ won’t make sense. Even if you are in your 60s, you can still use your name since it will always be valid.
  • Choose words that are easy to remember and spell. Avoid using words that are not used in daily life and are hard to remember.
  • Choose a name that can be branded. When you want to build a brand, the first step is to choose a name that can be easily recalled.

You can use domain name generators if you are having trouble choosing a domain name for your blog. It will then generate some creative domain names for your fashion blog based on the keywords you enter.

Step 5: Get a vibrant theme or template

Almost all of the necessary steps have already been completed. Now it’s time to make your blog look just as great as your talent. Consider focusing on the creativity part that drove you to start a fashion blog and use it to generate a wonderful concept for your blog. A successful blog has a creative and unique theme that sets it apart from other fashion blogs.

You can have unlimited free or paid pre-set themes for your fashion blog with WordPress. You need to make a few adjustments and it is ready to use. Remove the default pages and content of the theme or template you choose. Put together all the elements, such as additional pages, images, media files, and text, as if you were putting together an outfit.

Step 6: Adding useful pages to your blog site

It is now time to add some static content to your blog site. Content can be static or dynamic. Since you will be updating your blog often, the content will be dynamic. As soon as you post a new blog post, your previous posts will move down. Meanwhile, static pages are those that remain the same and are easy to find. They are common on the internet and almost every website has them. Include the following pages on your fashion blog:

About us

Your visitors will learn about your story on this page. What is your story? When did you start your blog? What inspires you? How will your blog help your audience/readers? Even though the page says ‘About us’, ensure that you make this page about your visitors as well. Tell them how much you value them and how your blog can help them.

Contact us

Blogs may seem like one-way conversations, but nobody is only interested in your views. You need to make sure that your readers can reach you. Create a contact us page and make it easy for them to get in touch with you. You can include your work email, a message box on the page, and links to your social media profiles. Be specific about the type of messages you will respond to, so that you don’t get spammed.

Privacy policies

People often mention this age in the footer, not the header, so you might not even know it. This page covers the privacy policies thoroughly. The privacy statement explains what data your website collects and for what purposes. Cookie information is commonly used by websites. It’s important to be transparent about how your site collects and uses visitor data. It can protect you from legal lawsuits and gain the trust of your visitors.

Copyright info

As with the privacy policy page, this page is often found in the footer of the website. It states that everything on your site is your intellectual property and that no one is authorized to claim your work as their own.

Gallery/Portfolio

You should have a gallery on your fashion blog site, even though it’s an optional page. With this page, your audience will be able to see your creativity. This can be an attraction point of your website if you have a model or you want to display pictures of your own outfits or styles. Instagram also allows you to upload your own photos. When it comes to posting content on your site, I recommend being consistent. If your site is busier and larger, you might need to post every day. At first, you can post twice a week on your portfolio or gallery.

Step 7: Writing your first blog post

Once your blog site is up, you can finally focus on what’s important: creating useful content for the fashion community. The content of your website is what drives it. You won’t get anywhere with the slickest, most beautiful website but useless content. Write a descriptive article introducing yourself as a first step. Writing your first blog can be overwhelming, so I have compiled a list of useful tips for you.

Brainstorming the topic

Identify the topic you want to write about. Instead of going full-on fashionista techie, start with something basic which can serve as the foundation for your upcoming blog post. Be sure, however, that the topic is still interesting, useful, and informative. You can begin by sharing a personal experience, such as how you planned your outfits for a trip. There is no right or wrong way to do it. Sit back, relax, and come up with a topic that makes your heart sing. Don’t forget about your readers. Be sure to include things that you think your reader would like and relate to. As long as you stay true to yourself and come up with topics that your readers are interested in, you are doing everything right.

Sticking to your niche

As we mentioned before, fashion is a relatively broad term, and it needs to be narrowed down. The more you jump from one niche to another, the less relevant it is to your readers. Whenever a visitor finds something relevant and interesting on your site, they come back to it. If you keep switching between different niches, you will lose your existing audience. Avoid this mistake at all costs.

Use catchy and creative titles

In order to grab your audience’s attention, you need creative and catchy titles. A catchy title makes your visitors click on your blog post and even share it with their contacts. As a result, it goes viral even without you asking for it. Here are some quick tips to help you come up with catchy and creative blog post titles:

  • Provide your audience with useful and relevant information. In your title, you promise the reader a solution to the problem they are currently experiencing, which is why they clicked on your blog post in the first place. Think of titles like ‘A beginner’s guide to a killer wardrobe’, ‘Wear your LBD 5 different ways’, ‘5 types of shoes every girl should have. You get the idea.
  • You are most likely to be found on the internet with short and sweet titles. Furthermore, a short title is more likely to be clicked by a reader than a long one.
  • Your titles should be highlighted with compelling adjectives. As an example, ‘5 useful tips’ is more likely to catch your attention than ‘5 tips’.
  • Listicles are visually appealing and shareable, so make one every now and then. In addition, include numbers in your title to catch people’s attention. As an example, ‘7 ways to get discounts on online purchases’ is more appealing than ‘get discounts on online purchases.
  • Your audience will appreciate some insights you provide. Your content is more likely to attract an audience if it is useful, relevant, and unique. Include interesting theories, strategies, DIYs, and life-hacks in your blog posts.

Create easy to read posts

Plain-text posts with never-ending paragraphs are boring and uninteresting. Always write long and descriptive blog posts, but break them up with interesting headings, bullet points, tables, images, videos, gif files, etc. On the internet, short paragraphs are the best. Your post will be easier to read and easier to enjoy. Here’s an example: you’ll notice a lot of subheadings, bulleted points, and images to make it easier for you to read.

Use high-resolution media files

Other niches might do fine without so many pictures, but fashion is all about pictures. There’s nothing wrong with adding more pictures to your articles than text. As a result, make it a habit to include as many images as possible in your blog posts. You would see photos of photoshoots, selfies, outfit looks, and more for a more popular and successful blog post. Although you are just getting started, stock images can be a lifesaver for you. Platforms such as Pexels, Pixabay, Unsplash, etc, provide royalty-free, high-resolution images for free. You must provide credit, however.

How to drive traffic to your fashion blog

You won’t get a large audience by the next day if your post doesn’t go viral overnight. You need to be patient and put some effort into bringing the audience to your blog sites. The following tips will help you drive more traffic to your fashion blogs:

Promote your blog on social media

The best way to get an audience for fashion blogs is by using social media marketing. Focus on image-heavy posts, and you’ll be able to draw an ideal audience. Integrate social share buttons onto your site so that your audience can share your work on their networks. Get creative with your Instagram profile and promote your fashion blog site there. Instagram is undoubtedly the best platform for fashion bloggers. You can even become an influencer with Instagram. Provide relevant and useful content, and you’ll be able to attract some quality traffic.

In addition to building a social media strategy, you can figure out what to post, how often to post, and whether to post organic or paid content. Start focusing on social media tools to organize your marketing campaigns. Additionally, you can experiment with social media advertising on platforms such as Facebook or Instagram if you have a little budget to spare.

Send out email newsletters frequently

You should start building your email list as early as possible. When you launch your blog site, integrate a signup form. You would need to give your audience a reason to subscribe to your email newsletter. It can be a free eBook, gift coupon, premium content, or anything which is not available otherwise. An email list might take a lot of time and effort, but it can be an asset in the long run. Subscribers are basically traffic that finds your content useful and wants to see more of it. These are the people you want to keep.

Email marketing tools like ConvertKit and SendinBlue are effective and efficient. Their affordable plans offer great templates, scheduling features, and so much more.

Consistency is key

Consistent audiences appreciate consistency. It can become confusing for your audience if you post one article today and the next after two weeks, and then post another after two days. In contrast, posting regularly will keep your visitors coming back for more. We are not pressuring you to post frequently. We just want you to maintain a consistent posting schedule. It doesn’t matter if you only post once a week, just pick a day, like Wednesday or Thursday, and keep posting every Wednesday or Thursday. Posting twice a week is ideal for beginners. On the other hand, a busier and larger blog needs to post more frequently, every day.

Try to inform your audience through your social media profiles or email newsletter in case you need to delay posting. Just showing you are genuinely busy is enough to prove you are not procrastinating. If you write in advance and keep a blog or two in a buffer, you can avoid any delays.

Engage your community

Followers and readers aren’t enough, you have to engage with them as well. Provide a way for them to get in touch with you and when they do, respond to them. Respond to your audience’s comments and emails to encourage them to comment on your blog. Asking what your audience expects next from you will not only give you ideas for your next project but will also help you build relationships with them.

Connect with other authors, bloggers, and influencers

Getting noticed can be accomplished through networking. You need to interact with other influencers or fashion bloggers, comment on their blog posts, promote their work, etc., and they can do the same for you. You are sharing their work with your audience, and they will do the same, which is a great way to expand your audience.

Step 9: How to monetize your fashion blog

It’s time to start making money from your fashion blog once it starts growing. Being passionate about what you do can lead to making a living from it. Here are a few ways to make money from your fashion blog:

Display ads

You can earn money by displaying ads on your blog site using Google AdSense. Additionally, you don’t have to deal directly with the advertisers, since Google AdSense finds the advertisers for you. When a user clicks on an ad on your website, you earn a commission. This won’t make you a fortune, but it’s a good start.

Become an Instagram influencer

You can become an influencer and promote brands. A brand will approach you and ask you to promote their brand for money. In this way, how much you make is entirely dependent on the brand’s budget and your negotiation skills. If you want to pull this off, you need a huge following. You can contact brands directly if you have great marketing ideas. Even if nothing happens, they will still have your contact information for future reference. Various influencer marketing platforms exist, such as Rep, WebInfluencial, etc. You can also create a profile there to have a better chance at getting a brand promotion campaign.

Affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is more like native advertising. You write an article with links to products or services you think your audience might be interested in. The more people who purchase through the affiliate link, the more commission you earn. The most popular affiliate partner out there for fashion bloggers is Amazon Affiliate.

Conclusion

Have you made it so far? After you have mastered the fundamentals, it is time for you to get to work. Starting a blog can be overwhelming. There aren’t thousands of visitors every day. It takes hard work and patience. Don’t give up and keep creating useful content. Eventually, you will succeed. When you have a steady audience, there is no turning back.
